School’s out for summer, well almost

Posted in Melbourne adventures on October 15, 2008 by bnel

Just got out of my last class of the year, well for these kids its for the year, for me, well i have to go back in january. So i guess i have quite a while off. pretty good. its crazy though, out here, the art students are pretty much finished next week and then dont have to be back until march. MARCH. that’s almost half a year right there of no school. its crazy! anyways, i guess it hasnt hit me that im pretty much done. i have to finish up my projects for assessment and then im home free. back to the beach and relaxation and then back to the states. ill actually be home exactly 1 month from today, pretty stoked on that. cant wait to eat nice healthy meals in the loving company of my family, oh the good old days. speaking of dinner, i got invited to have a nice dinner tonight at my buddy ben’s. wonder what he’s going to be cooking up this evening. perhaps ill bring over some wine, that would probably be nice. hope you all are enjoying eating dinner with your mates, or your family.. its a nice concept.

so steve and i ended up driving around the other day and found ourselves at the Coburg Drive-in, cool little place. no one there really, i guess because it was a monday and it was a 10:20 showing of some random movies, well i have never heard of them. dont really get around to watching the tele. cant be bothered, and quite frankly i dont mind it one bit.  but we ended up seeing this movie evil eye- yea, dont bother going to see it, if you were. i mean it was kind of alright, but theee worst, well maybe second worse, ending ever conceived. man it was shit.  but i am going to some snowboard premier tomorrow night, so hopefully that makes up for the shit movie on monday, im sure it will. and then DJ Spooky on sunday, man im stoked for that one. Not sure if i’ve written about it, but he went to Antarctica and recorded the sound of glaciers and whatnot and is mixing it. not too sure on those details, but it can be checked out online, if anyone is interested.

hmm, so today my alarm either did not go off, or i just slept right through it. but either way i was an hour late for glassblowing which kind of bummed me out, because i love that class and i didnt get to blow in the morning. so i only got to make one piece today, but it was a good one. we got to work with color, seeing how we all finished our projects and it was the last day, so i made a nice white cup. good shape for the hand. ill bring that one home for sure. the other stuff, i guess we shall see. hopefully shipping doesn’t cost as much as a car. oh and i get to blow tomorrow morning and then help ben out, my teacher, in the afternoon. he even said he would pay me, which is pretty awesome  if you ask me. but anyways, im going to go, andrew is calling me on skype. hope your all in good health and getting excited for whats to come… whatever it may be.

northcote street festival

Posted in Melbourne adventures with tags on September 23, 2008 by bnel

nah yeah, its been quite sometime since ive last written, but i haven’t felt like anyting prolific has happened, well i dont think i have written about anything prolific at all, well except about cooking. thats pretty big in my life right now. but anyways i went to the northcote high street festival on sunday. i think it was called high vibes music fest. it was really great. thousands of people roaming this cloased off street with all the pubs open with food and drinks and live music all over the place. beer gardens, a guy making a lighter sculpture on the sidewalk. that guy had 4 big sacks of different colored lighters that he had collected or given to or something. but a shitload of lighters. it was a pretty cool sculpture/picture. swirl of different colors. but the greatest thing was, we were standing there and one of his buddies brings him a beer and then was like, “hey you got a light?” it was pretty funny and the guy had to reach in his pocket and toss him one. and then there was this i dont know, 13 year old kid going at it on a didjerydu. he was pretty good too. and i definitly dont know how to spell that one. but i think you get the point. but we hung out in this beer garden out back on a bar/store. it was awesome. a tent with a dj, a grill with sausages and corn, beer taps, wine and bubbles, and almond trees, and a little fire in a trash can, and people dancing. it was great. the whole day was pretty grand, and you could not have asked for a better day, even if that was possible. sadly though, i didnt not have my camera, or well anything for that matter. it was stuck at roy’s and i was in richmond and then northcote, no phone. bad story. but anyways, it was a good time. maybe there will be a few more as the weather gets warmer. its getting pretty nice out though. today i think its in the 70’s pretty good. well im going to go outside, i cant look at this computer box anymore. hope your all doing well though.

food and snow- two of my favorite things

Posted in Melbourne adventures on August 27, 2008 by bnel

so it seems someone is getting pretty lazy with this blog thing. sorry about that. so plenty of things have happened since i last wrote. like great things. i condense it all pretty well for ya. since work is pretty busy and the kitchen is lacking a real team right now, i was in there doing some prep work. like tedious shit- i mean i was there shredding chicken and cauliflower into tiney shreds and flourettes.. for a few hours. and then rolling zuccini in flower and egg and breadcrumbs to make zuccini fritters which also took quite a while. but it had to be done. i really dont know how they get by in there with all the things that have to be done with so few hands. its crazy! but somehow, the food comes out amazing and looks beautiful as well.  that reminds me, i got to try a crystallized violet, i mean who even things to make that? crystalized violets…   yea, so i worked in the kitchen a bit and in the bar the rest of the night on thursday and friday and then on saturday, worked in teh kitchen from 2-7 and then 7-2:30 behind the bar. it was a looong ass day of standing. and then, we planned to get to the mountains and ride on sunday. so after work we left to get our stuff together from like 4 different places, didnt get to sleep until 5 and then got up at 8, left around 9 and for some reason didnt get to the mountains until about 4 or so. we went the wrong way and made some pretty random stops. but it was a beautiful ride through the country. it was soo nice to get out of the city and away from school and work and this area. and finally getting up to the mountain and seeing snow, was awesome. it was just a really expensive weekend, with the ticket, bed, boots and board, and i had to buy soem new goggles- it sucked. and the boots were terrible, but i made the best of it. i mean there really wasn’t much to do and we didn’t know anyone with extra stuff. anyways, we stayed at a backpackers in a tiny room with bunk beds and a bathroom. i made the judicial desiscion to skip school on monday, but im doing well, so i wasn’t worried about it, and i mean come on- its snowboarding. the mountain- mt. buller, actually wasn’t that bad. real open terrain, like a-basin, bigger than the basin too. the mountain was pretty all over the place, a bit confusing actually and the snow was soo heavy and varied around the mountain. pretty soft on the front, hard and icey in other areas. but it was so much fun just being there and getting to ride for the day. well i better get back to class.  i need to work again tonight and probably tomorrow night and well the rest of the weekend. so ill try to find some time to write more. i haven’t been doing very well with that lately, compared to my first posts… oh well. time doesn’t stop.

Brigette loves Glass

Posted in Melbourne adventures on July 23, 2008 by bnel

So its been quite a long day of glassblowing for me, well i guess it could be longer. But my class begins at 9 and goes until 12, then we have a 2 hour break for lunch and an artist talk if we wish to attend, and then class starts back up at 2 and runs until 5. so it takes up the whole day. but that does not upset me, for im inlove with it all. I mean, that is why i came here in the first place. But im sadly disappointed to be stuck in a class of first years, who haven’t been blowing for very long, so the class moves slowly and im not getting pushed at all, which is what id like to happen. well, hopefully things pick up. but all and all im having a great time in all of my classes. They are all pretty open and relaxed, which is nice and quite different from back home at DU. I don’t mind it though. Well im headed into the city again tonight, Wednesdays are the nights to go to Jerome’s for some drinks. i really do love the place and hope to get a job there. that would be fabulous. ill ask Leige about it tonight and see what he says. oh, so i met one of my other flat mates, after a month of being here. yup, thats how much im at my place and actually interact with the other girls who live there. but she’s another aussie, a second year, is getting her BA in some random things, they weren’t too intersting, seeing how i dont remember. something like history-pretty boring. but she has some pretty damn long hair, down to her bum. its pretty nasty. well i mean she keeps it clean and all, but its just so long that it kind of creaps me out. oh and her name is.. shit.. mm. yea, well cant remember her name at this moment. im such a terribly person. well anyways, she seems a bit, tense or maybe she just likes order or something. but there is something weird about her. same with carol, my other flatmate, the one from hong kong. she tends to talk to herself…a lot, like in the kitchen and when she runs to catch her phone, oh man is that funny. but i cant laugh out loud about it… she would obviously hear me. well im going to stop snickering about my flatmates. they are all nice girls in the end… i think.   people keep coming in and speaking chinese, im surprised i can still catch a few of the things that they are talking about, kid of makes me miss the language. maybe someday ill pick it up again.  well im getting terribly hungry and need to get ready to enter the city life again. hope to hear from some of you soon.

.Brige

ooh yea, did i tell you i ate kangaroo? well it was a week or so ago, but it really wasn’t bad. a bit gamey and the only thing i could think about while i was eating it, was fur. so that kind of turned me off. but definitely something worth trying.   …i still can’t think of her name, sorry.  and chinese girls are soo funny to observe

the wonders of rosemary

Posted in Melbourne adventures on July 22, 2008 by bnel

so to all of you who thought i was dead, im not…obviously. But I am sorry about the loong delay between now and my last post. I just had a long weekend that didn’t prop me in a library in front of a computer, which quite frankly isnt bad. Its good to let the brain and eyes take a rest from the cyber world. So ill go through a short runthrough of the weekend, which started on wednesday, and will begin again tomorrow, also wednesday, for me here, atleast. anyways.. Wednesday started at St. Jerome’s for a bit. listened to some DJ’s and had some drinks, mm don’t think too much happened that night. But i did make arrangements to hang out at the skatepark the next day with Leige and his brother Miles, both of whom tend the bar and Leige is aprt manager at Jerome’s. So we met there the next day and headed to the skatepark, downtown not too far from federation square. There actually weren’t many people there, at all. about 4 or 5. it was nice. we only had 2 boards, so i got to skate for a bit and paid 5 bucks to rent one out i guess from the shop near the park. it was nice to finally get a skate in. And then that night, Leige mixed at jerome’s for a while, then we headed to some place called the Carlton Club where some other people were DJ’ing. honestly, everyone i know out here is a dj, or their brother is or their girlfriend.. but it seems like everyone and its pretty good easy money. i should really try to pick it up. i havent tried really, since that first time at ricky’s. but anyways, friday night we went to this fundraiser party for an upcoming artists magazine, “white elephant”. should be good. everyone invovled seems real great. but there was this great beer served at the party, an organice blonde beer. ill have to take a photo of the label, which is also quite pretty itself. the party was fun, miles’ band played, people mixed, and everyone mingled and soon drifted home. But i must say, people stay out and party allll night looong, like until the wee hours, well i guess mid morning hours of the day. I dont know how this society stays alive and doesnt shrivel into zombies. i need my sleep. but sometimes i begin to think i get too much sleep, sometimes 12, 13 hours. that cant be healthy. damn, i keep making these blogs soo long. sorry about that again. i guess that what happens when you try to fit a week into one post. hmm saturday was luke’s birthday at some pub in northcourt, pronounced northkit, so i sounded like an idiot trying to ask for directions. but it was a bit of a tram ride away, i was pretty nervous of getting lost, seeing how i dont have a working mobile yet and i hadn’t the slightest fo where i was heaed. but i made it. it was a nice place, but a pint was 8 bucks! rediculous. after there, we headed to some couples house, lucy and karl. cute place, karl is some designer for a japanese company, not sure what. but they had some expensive collectors items that were pretty sweet. but we made some french fries, which were so amazing. new recipe for all of you to try.. slice potatoes into thin circles or whatever, put them in a bowl of milk and tear rosemary needles off the stema nd put them in with the bowl. mix it  all around and leave to sit for a bit and then spread them out on a buttered baking sheet and pop em intot he over. flip them at some point and then take em out when you think they are ready. im not good with times and whatnot, but youll figure it out. but let me tell you, best chips ever! well id keep writing, but i need to do soem research for my glass class tomorrow, we need to have a proposal with sketches of 3 bowls and 3 glasses that we are going to produce and some research on an artists who will influence us. so im off. but hope your all well, and i apologize about the lengthiness of this. ill be back to write tomorrow. hope your all sleeping well

Today, a regular tuesday

Posted in Melbourne adventures on July 8, 2008 by bnel

Woke up today, around 11:30 or so, it looked pretty crappy out, as usual. The ground was wet, from signs of this morning’s rain fall. But I forced myself and Berto to go out and do something. Ricky was out taking care of things and Roy goes to work in the morning. He works on a computer all day, which would suck terribly, I can’t really imagine him doing that, but he looks at people space or spaces that they are going to buy and looks at how they can be remodeled to be more sustainable, so its pretty cool, except the whole computer business part of it all. So we hopped on our bikes and just started to ride. Went across the city- we hadn’t been over there before, so I thought it would make for an interesting ride. We ended up riding through this beautiful big park with crazy trees that had long branches and wild trunks, it was pretty nice in there. Riding out of the park, we saw some stadium lights and decided to check it out. It ended up being this huge sports center area with tennis courts and the stadium, cafes, a bunch of bridges going all around, stairs, statues of people playing cricket and footy, you know, sports place stuff. We rode through this one bridge and then along the river side. We came upon this big ferris wheel, it was pretty randomly placed, not much around it. kind of funny site. But there were playgrounds as we went further and then i finally spotted a skate park. This got me pretty excited, i’ve been trying to find one ever since I got here. I mean there are loads of them that I have found through using the internet, but I don’t know how to get to them or really know where they are exactly. But this one is real easy to get to. its pretty small, and isn’t the greatest, but looks fun. There were quite a few kids there too, for this cold of a day, it surprised me. Kids were pretty good, not too good compared to the cats who ride at the Denver park, some of those kids are ridiculously good. Well there weren’t any other girls in sight, and I won’t have anyone to skate with, yet, so it will be a bit intimidating and lonely. Ill just have to suck up and deal. let you know how it goes, when my deck gets here. Well tomorrow Berto has to go to Sydney for some orientation crap, and Ricky is going with him. So im going back home to Caulfield- haven’t been there in days. My flatmates probably think I died. well they probably don’t even care that im gone. It is going to suck back there, all cold and lonely and boring, but hopefully ill find a job and things will pick up and I can afford this Australian life style that these people live. I got some funny photos from the Gold Party, hopefully they will load up. we’ll see.

The Gold Party

Posted in Melbourne adventures with tags , , , on July 7, 2008 by bnel

So the past few nights, ive been staying with Berto, Ricky and Roy- the other flat mate. He is from Perth- the west side of Australia, but moved here after traveling around southeast asia and some other places, real nice guy. He’s got a funny move to him, its pretty great. ill have to post some photographs when i get a memory chip and a hold of my laptop. The past few days have been pretty all around. We went down to this environmental place, where there are gardens and this bike shed where they take in and sell used bikes and parts and let people use the tools for free, but the whole place is a sustainable living area. I didn’t get to see much or learn much about it, so ill have to go back sometime to check it out and get the whole rundown. But we went on friday and this older guy with a braid was working there on taking apart a kids bike. he said they were closed, not enough volunteers that day, so we were kind of bummed, seeing how we had traveled a bit of a ways. but Ricky kind of coaxed him into letting me buy this one bike that had just arrived. so i got real lucky. The bike is green, with silver mud butt guards, a bell, has brakes and gears that work, and even a pair of sweet toe clips. so its a pretty great steal, especially for only 25 bucks. i really want to take it home with me… i guess ill just have to see when that time comes around. So we’ve been riding around the city, stopped into a few bars thursday and friday night, but didn’t drink much, due to the $5 a beer. beers can also be called schooners, stubbys, a pot-which is about half a pint, and well there are probably other names. but anyways. We stopped at this one bar, called the Croft, i really hope im not repeating myself, ive lose track of the days sometimes. But the Croft, probably my favorite bar so far, ever, except the prices. but ill have to take some pictures of the place. It is down this ally way- a place where you wouldn’t think to go because there are cars parked, and then you go around the corner where there are back doors to restaurants, trash on the ground, but amazing graffiti on the walls. the whole city actually has beautiful graffiti, some of the walls are even protected by the city, so you can’t tag over things. but the croft was hidden at the end of the ally. its a nicely dim lit place, with soft, light green, kind of sea foam, walls, there are glass beakers in cases and on the shelves, its real cool. and the floors are made of small tile, like a bathroom, and the table we sat at was a high table with stools and there was a sink in it-but it didnt work. the whole place was kind of a chemistry lab- the croft institute. and there was great jazz music playing- the whole thing was just perfectly great. i wish you could all go there to see what im talking about. this was also the first place where i got carded, it was kind of exciting. so we had a beer there, left to go to another bar called Jerome’s, which was also real cool. had a back area that was kind of inbetween buildings, so there wasn’t a roof covering the whole thing. but there were twinkle lights, a dj, some tables, an umbrella, heat lamps, and a bunch of kids/ people/ whatever hanging out, dancing, drinking, it was a cool scene. kind of grungey, but real cool. we didnt stay long, we were all kind of tired and wanted to head home. oh yea, so there is a fine if you don’t wear a helmet while riding, and if you don’t have 2 lights on your bike, which i don’t have either, yet. But its kind of crazy, just expensive and kind of makes not so easy and free as it should be to ride your bike around. I don’t much like it. So saturday night, we have plans to go to a “gold” themed party. i like that theme, colors. its a good one. i suggest it to others who are planning on throwing a party anytime soon. We ended up in this huge mall that wrapped around with grocery stores, clothing stores, and well all types of stores. I found this one jewelry store that was trying to close, so everything in it was a dollar. pretty sweet. i mean, not the nicest things, kind of cheap, but i found some gold hoop earings, kind of ghetto, and a gold bracelet. so i was set with some gold fixings for the party. The party was held in the warehouse house space. real high ceilings and a huge open space, just flooded with all types of kids in random bits or suits of gold. it was great. there were gold balloons floating up into the ceiling, people in full gold spandex suits, gold glitter, wine, booze, and loads of dancing. too bad the DJ sucked though. Really couldn’t transition from song to song. I mean when i tried on Ricky’s mixer, i was better than this kid. but we danced anyways, actually we dance until the cops came at 4 in the morning. time flew by pretty weird that night. but it was fun. the kids here have a pretty different style from home, i cant really explain it, a photo will have to do at sometime. the parties here are BYOB, seeing how booze is so expensive, so we didn’t really drink much, made some strange tequila and orange juice and beer drinks before we left. not so good. The dancing was the highlight. i haven’t danced that much in a while, it felt good, and Roy is a pretty funny dancer, he kind of has this la-de-dah motion. i don’t know. well the night ended and we all woke up at 3 in the afternoon the next day. nice and early right there. but we had enough energy to ride over to this pub called the Retreat in east Brunswick, i think it was. Roy knew of some band from New Zealand that was playing for free, and they were quite good too. nice little pub, except the $14 jugs of beer- which is like a pitcher, but smaller. it sucks- the prices, but ill just have to get used to it. Im planning on getting a job, which will help my financial situation in these parts. well im sure this is a long ass post, sorry about that. i can’t even bring myself to edit it right now, sorry about that too. hope your all doing well

Orientation

Posted in Melbourne adventures on July 3, 2008 by bnel

So orientation has begun, today is the third day of it. Its pretty boring, like all orientations, but i’ve been getting fed and hanging with some new people. It all ends tomorrow, leaving me with a week to do whatever, so im thinking New Zealand, but will have to check out the rates.. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? anyways..I met my other flat mate yesterday at orientation on a tour of my campus. Her name is emily, Im pretty sure she goes to school in Chicago. She isn’t really liking it here so far. She doesn’t seem like the type of girl who is willing to explore a back ally or try some exotic food from a side stand on the streets, or go out and tag a billboard…not that i do that or anything but… Not too exciting if you ask me. But she is nice and will be a good flat mate to have. My campus is pretty sweet. The whole art department and building is huge, compared to DU’s- which is pretty shitty if you ask me, sorry Charlie. eh, you probably agree. But there is so much studio space for every area of study and they provide little individual spaces for most of the students, but only in drawing and painting. But all the studios are huge! The sculpture studio is about the size of the art Building, its awesome! And the glass studio is located on the roof, its pretty nice- has three , maybe four glory holes, but no torch work. mostly slumping, casting, and the hot shop. But im soo excited for that to start. Ill take some photos when I get a memory card. The other day, after meeting Berto and Ricky, Berto and myself made our way downtown. Getting to the main station downtown, for some reason, you need to run your ticket through in order to exit the station, and if its not valid, the doors will not open. And of course I was stuck. But some nice guy let me through with his card. Its strange. Im not sure why they would want to trap you in the station. Outside, the first thing I see is a beautiful Lybinskind building- pretty sure I didn’t spell his name right. But anyways, for those of you who are unaware, he designed the new wing of the Denver Art Museum. Its pretty awesome. But this was a much smaller and more modest building in comparison to the one at DAM. But a nice building it is, ill check it out one of these days and put up some photos. So we walked and made it to their house, a bit outside of the city center, where it isn’t so busy. They live in an old warehouse that was turned into smaller apartments. Its pretty nice too. Ricky has his turntables, but they aren’t that good- to him. They are cd turntables, not vinyl, so they don’t sound as good or work as well and its kind of cheating because you can see the beats and tempos and whatnot on the computer. But its pretty cool. I’d say the main thing to DJ’ing is knowing your tracks and where the beats/bass will match up. I hope to get the ear and get a hang of it. But we went for a burger- which was 9 bucks- i didnt even get fries with that! oh well, the minimum wage is around 14 dollars here, so i guess that is price. But the worse of that was the 40 dollars we spent on a 24 pack of Cooper beers. THAT was a ripoff. Don’t think ill be doing much drinking here. Which is definitely not a bad thing. So I went home after that, went to orientation the next day, didn’t do much after that. Had another late night of about 9pm and then fell asleep. Im on lunch break from orientation right now, trying to sign up for classes, but its taking forever. Well, ill be out tonight and tell you of my adventures to the bars… is what its looking like, not too sure. Will have to see what Ricky has planned. much love
